Biography —InfoDr. Jennifer Crouch is an art-science practitioner working in sculpture, textiles, drawing, installation and painting. They have a background in physics and medical illustration and experience working as an artist in scientific laboratories, on expeditions in the Arctic Circle, with communities, and as part of local and international art projects. Jennifer has guest lectured at universities across the UK and Europe, teaches textile arts at Morley College London, is fashion lead at NewVic FE College, and is an associate lecturer on the MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins, London. They have published books on popular science and anatomical art. The fleshy, detailed and textural nature of their work investigates the multi-scalar nature of embodied knowledges and how materials, sensations and biogeochemical cycles intersect and shape our subjectivities. Jennifer has a background in physics and medical illustration, which informs their work as a public engagement professional, which they enact as an author and through interactive events and workshops such as those developed as a member of Jiggling Atoms. They are an associate lecturer on the MA in Art and Science at Central Saint Martins, a sessional lecturer in textiles at Morley College, and have taught in multiple universities on the topic of art-science, textile research methodologies and creative practice across the UK and Europe. They were awarded their PhD in 2023 from the University of Portsmouth,&nbsp;titled&nbsp;Re-corporealising MRI Data: A Practice-based Investigation through Art and Science. Their thesis is an exploration of corporeal matter, embodied knowledge, disability studies, disease and MRI physics via queer feminist science studies, the critical posthumanities, and post-digital practices of sculpture, weaving textiles and illustrated cartographies. Each image shows part of a landscape, and when all the images are lined up they form a wider horizon of mountains, holes, valleys, clouds, rock formations and cliffs. It is possible to create multiple combinations of landscapes. Milled from dense fleshy pink foam, this sculpture is a physical and tactile rendering of what MRI reveals. The changes I made to my data resulted in patchy and globular, partial and flayed forms. My data sculpture is an uncertain embodiment of subjectivity contextualised by the speculative, unknown status of my cancer in 2018. Someday, with a telescopic lens an acre in extent, we are going to see something not to out liking, some looming shape outside there across the great pond of space. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Whenever I catch a frog’s eye I am aware of this, but I do not find it depressing. I stand quite still and try hard not to move or lift a hand since it would only frighten him. And standing thus it finally comes to me that this is the most enormous extension of vision of which life is capable: the projection of itself into other lives. This is the lonely magnificent power of humanity.
